International Rescue


Ah international week, the chance for bickering club fans across the land to put down their swords, place title challenges and relegation scraps to one side, and get behind their country. Well, perhaps.

How did they all get on? Here are my musings:


First off, the new England kit. What is that all about? It’s a very clever marketing strategy from the kit-makers as it has definitely got people talking. But it still doesn’t hide the fact that it looks like a school P.E. kit, or a cricket shirt, or a polo shirt…in fact anything but a football kit.


Secondly, after David Beckham finally, finally broke Bobby Moore’s record, can people shut up about that now?! It is as repetitive as talk of 1966!


That said, one player who won’t be reaching 100 caps is Michael Owen. If he hadn’t already got the hint that his England career is over, he should now after Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole, Peter Crouch AND Darren Bent were all called up ahead of him. Game over I’m afraid Michael.


Own-goal of the weekend: Kevin ‘killer’ Kilbane. A left winger at left back, killer (as he is known to his mates) undid Ireland’s hard work against Bulgaria with a sweetly struck half-volley, into the wrong net.


Post-match interview of the weekend: Craig Bellamy, who, on the verge of tears, said: “You have just seen two poor sides trying to contest this group. None of us have a glimmer of hope of qualifying, that’s a fact after today.” Bellamy obviously doing his best to boost the Welsh players’ confidence ahead of the Germany game on Wednesday.
